Stupid Never Dies is certainly unique. Featuring Davy, a weak, cowardly zombie that has to work his way through dungeon after dungeon, all in the name of love (and some serious upgrades), it doesn’t pull back when it comes to weirdness. That certainly applies with one of the game’s early boss fights, The Phoenix, but beating him can prove difficult if you’re not sure what to do, or what works best. That’s why we’re here, so by the end of this guide, you’ll know exactly how to beat The Phoenix in Stupid Never Dies.
How to Beat The Phoenix in Stupid Never Dies
Don’t forget, earlier in the game you ate the Phoenix Egg which allowed you the capability to withstand coming down into the dungeons. Understandably, this may have caused The Phoenix to be a little annoyed. You’ll come to him in the final layer of a dungeon run, and if you’re not prepared, he won’t have much trouble taking you out. You’ll need to be a high enough level, and certainly pick out the right Style Eats.

By the time you come to the final layer, the game will tell you the below:
- Recommended Level: 14
- Suggested by us Level: 20+
As above, while Stupid Never Dies suggests Level 14, I think you’ll need to be higher than that. At least Level 20, if not higher will give you a much bigger chance of success.
The Phoenix has some seriously impressive attacks, including raining fire down on the environment below, which he’ll do right at the beginning. When this happens, do not stop moving, and it’s better if you’re one of either the Werewolf or Harpy Styles, which you should have a variant of in some shape or form by now. These move quicker than Davy as himself, so you’d be silly not to take advantage.
Once this rain of fire comes to an end, you’ll want to go on the offensive. The Phoenix will attack you with arcs of fire that sweep across the floor (jump or fly over these), and of course plenty of physical attacks. You’ll also see him unleash red, unblockable attacks. Don’t bother trying to Stupid Parry these, as you’ll end up getting hurt massively.
Instead, move out of the way, and then using one of the two Styles (Werewolf is better suited, in my opinion), attack. Use Davy’s Bite attack to deal some significant damage of your own, as well as the L1 attack for the Style Variant, and you’ll quickly see the health of The Phoenix drop. I had Zombie Vomit equipped, which against The Phoenix is functionally useless, as he doesn’t land at all.
Focus on using the Werewolf or Harpy Styles to cause maximum damage as quickly as possible, and as I said, don’t stop moving. The Phoenix is quick and damaging in a degree you’ve not seen before. If you get his health down to half, you’ll be treated to a cutscene involving The Phoenix, and the boss fight will come to an end prematurely.

It turns out that egg you ate earlier in the game was something else entirely, and now you have access to your own superpowered mode, the Davy Burst. Useful against average enemies and bosses alike, it’s not something to take lightly and will come in great help as you progress through the layers.
As early game bosses go, this is a big one, but at least now you know how to beat The Phoenix in Stupid Never Dies, and in doing so, have earned the You…N…Not Bad… trophy!
