You could be exploring a random area, heading for Lazlo, or just in search of the next boss to fight in Mortal Shell 2. Well, you’ve found the latter, and Vellen, High Lord of Gammon, isn’t a boss to sniff out. By the end of the guide, we’ll have you fully up to speed on how to beat Vellen, High Lord of Gammon, his rewards, and his location.
Location of Vellen, High Lord of Gammon in Mortal Shell 2
In the bottom half of the map, all the way over on the top left is where you’ll find Vellen, High Lord of Gammon. Starting at the Gate of Mammon, near the Corrupted Gate, head down the hill towards the coffin-filled village, and take a left, making use of the traversal gate that’ll send you hurtling over the gap.
Head up the elevator, and after a walk up a wooden boardwalk, you’ll see a huge fort in front of you. There are enemies, corruption, and multiple different routes you can go, but you only need to focus on getting straight to the other side of where you currently are. Make your way across the courtyard, fighting or fleeing the enemies, and then turn right when you reach the wall. In front of you is a series of archways. Head towards them, and you’ll notice a stairway and big gateway on the left.
Head down there, and you’ll know you’re going in the right direction if you see a huge, round, rolling enemy in front of you. Beat him, then head to the bottom, killing the enemies as you go. You’ll soon see the arena, which contains Vellen, High Lord of Mammon, and now you move on from finding to beating him.

How to Beat Vellen, High Lord of Gammon in Mortal Shell 2
Vellen, High Lord of Gammon, is a boss protecting something. That something is Lazlo’s Shell, which you’ll be able to take after you’ve beaten him. He’s a boss that focuses on being quick and deadly, compared to others that take their time and hit hard. Getting caught in Vellen’s quick combos can be tantamount to an instant de-shelling, and in some cases, instant death if your health isn’t high enough.
However scary that may sound, he doesn’t have a lot of health, meaning if you take your time and practice your Hardening/Parrying and dodging, by the end of this guide you’ll have all the tools needed to beat him. To understand what I did, though, here’s my build.
- Eredrim Shell – Location here.
- Veteran’s Battle Axe – Location here.
- Troubadour Lute.
- Vatra Seal.
- Marksman’s Stone – Increases crit chance of ranged weapons.
- Retribution Stone – Increases Riposte damage.
- Deadeye Stone – Increases ranged crit damage.
- Berserker Stone – Increases damage output the lower your health is.
As mentioned, Vellen will attack quickly. His scythe also has a surprising range, and when he attacks in his swinging arcs, you may be surprised how quickly he crosses the ground, and how he still hits you, even if you’re what you’d consider far enough away. Bear that in mind when you’re waiting for the right moment to attack.

Most of Vellen’s attacks are normal, and because of that, I’d heavily suggest using the Vatra Seal so you can harden. Yes, the timing window is less, and it’s technically a little harder, especially if you mistime it and can’t use it till the meter fills back up, but it has the benefit of interrupting his combos completely if you succeed in getting the timing right. You’ll then be able to advance on him, attack, heal, or put more distance between yourself and him, giving you a bit of time to think and prepare for the next wave.
He does have an unblockable attack that will outright wreck you, word of warning. When you see that icon appear, dodge backwards at least twice to avoid it. When you’re certain you have enough space between you, use the time he’s finishing his animation to heal, or make use of your Shell’s abilities. Using Eredrim meant I had access to Shoulder Bash, and having bonded fully with him and upgraded his abilities, it meant that a single hit with that did a huge amount of break damage. Following that up immediately with the Lute meant an easy Riposte attack on Vellen, so all-in-all, turning his unblockable attack into a weakness.
The smaller arena means he’s constantly on your heels, but don’t worry, with the above tips you’ll quickly figure out a good rhythm and eventually beat Vellen, High Lord of Gammon. After you do, you’ll get the following rewards for your efforts:
- Gloom
- Glimpse
And of course, don’t run off. Head forwards and grab the Lazlo shell, whose memory features another appearance from Vellen – he’s not the nicest guy.
