Although Valor Mortis is quite an intuitive game, there are some features throughout that the game isn’t very good at telling you about, as it either expects you to look for them yourself or simply to make do with what you already know, so we are here to tell you some of the things Valor Mortis doesn’t tell you!
Backstabs Can Only Happen in Stealth

For the most part, when you play a Soulslike, there are often ways to defeat enemies quite quickly through the ability to stab them in the back, doing a major amount of damage in one go, and this is very possible within Valor Mortis; just sadly, you can only do it during stealth.
This means that even if you do manage to get yourself in the right position to take an enemy down, you sadly can’t accomplish it as they are aware of you, so this means you will always need to fight enemies head-on in this situation. That being said, there are loads of ways to take enemies out unaware, so there is a reasonable balance to it.
Change Your Button Layouts
Although this isn’t something the game should tell you, it can be quite helpful for those who are either new to this genre or simply like to have things their own way, and the game does provide you with the option to change your button layouts on demand through the settings system.
There are a few different layouts you can pick that will allow you to alter your gameplay style to how you see fit, but fair warning: these layouts aren’t all perfect, with a few options being rather odd, so you still may not find the perfect solution.
Grinding is an Option
Even though Valor Mortis is quite generous in its Catalyst currency that allows you to level up, there are numerous ways to grind the system in the game, as there are various locations filled to the brim with enemies that you can simply rinse and repeat, and even right next to rest spots, making them easily accessible.
Although this is an option, the game doesn’t really tell you this, so you may simply decide to follow the story and hope you level up enough to continue forward, but you can fast travel backwards in the game to earlier sections and just grind out Catalysts.
Weapons Aren’t Just for Exploring or Killing

Now this may seem like an obvious one, but even though you can use your weapons to shoot enemies, stab them, or even set them on fire, your weapons can also be used to shoot specific parts of enemies that may not even look like weak spots.
For example, there is one enemy that carries around a basket of grenades; if you manage to shoot this basket or damage it in any way, the basket will explode, massively damaging the enemy.
As simple as this might be, there are lots of different enemies that have these unique, massive damage-dealing mechanics that don’t exactly stand out, with some being small explosive barrels on their backs, a fuel container, and others, so experiment with where you hit your enemies; just maybe don’t stab the explosive things.
