Throughout Valor Mortis you will come across plenty of bosses that you will need to overcome in order to progress in the game with the first boss and technically second being General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer as he is used as the intro boss once you get far enough in the first chapter and he is also the second boss in the game and this is the one we will be talking about.

How to Find General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer in Valor Mortis

As we have mentioned above, there are two instances in which you will come across General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer, as a boss, the first being in the first chapter of the game, where you are wandering the battlefield after waking up slowly, making your way to a camp that the boss can be found within.

Sadly, this boss encounter is likely going to end in defeat, as this boss deals an incredible amount of damage and will likely catch you off guard on your first playthrough, but lucky for you, this is a scripted loss, so there isn’t too much to worry about.

Once you progress past this fight, you will then need to make your way through the entirety of the second chapter of the game until you reach the end of the Quarry location. If you are worried about missing this boss, do not worry, as Valor Mortis is rather linear, and you cannot miss this boss in the story.

After you make your way out of the Quarry and head to the next location in the game, you will find yourself at the Abandoned Church, or at least the lead-up to it, as you will first find a lantern to rest at and a golden fog door indicating the beginning of the boss fight.

How to Beat General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer’s First Phase

Valor Mortis General Lothaire boss fight arena.

Now that you have made your way to General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer, it is time for your first proper attempt at this rather intimidating boss, but do not worry, as we are here to help guide you on your path to victory.

Once you enter the arena for General Lothaire, you will have a few seconds to take him in once again before the battle begins properly. Sadly, there is no set way the boss will attack you, but for me, I found that he made the same two attacks, where he either leapt into the sky and attempted to land on me or used the guns on his shoulders to shoot you from range.

The first attack is quite a simple attack to avoid, as he flies incredibly high and drops slowly, so being able to dodge is quite easy, which you will need to do, as this is an unblockable attack, and along with this, he will stay on his knees for a few seconds, opening himself up to some attacks that can do a decent amount of damage if you time it right.

The second attack, where the boss shoots his guns, will have two variations, with one being where he prepares 3 pistols over his shoulder before firing them all in rapid succession or the second version, where the boss shoots one pistol at a time over his shoulder. Either way, this attack can be quite stressful, as dodging the bullets requires a high reaction speed to dodge the bullets before they hit you.

After this initial attack, there will be plenty of combos that the boss will use against you that can easily knock you off your guard and take your health down in seconds, so we do recommend that you try and keep your distance when you can and rely heavily on your parries and dodges depending on what you feel you are best at. Personally we found parrying was the best form of defense against the boss, as perfect parries could deal a lot of stagger damage, allowing you to open the boss up for a very powerful stagger attack.

In regards of the various attacks and combos the boss will use, we will provide a list below to provide a short and sweet idea of what you can expect from the boss along with what we have already mentioned above.

  • The boss will swing the banner he has in his right hand in a wide arc in front of him twice, which has a large range, a lot bigger than you expect
  • A similar attack can happen with the boss swinging his sword that is in his left-hand side to the side but in a much shorter arc
  • The boss will again use his flagpole as a weapon, swinging it in a giant circle around him 3 times in rather rapid succession.
  • One combo uses the boss’s 3 different weapons as he swings his sword that’s in his left hand from the right to the left before following up with a slash with his flagpole before finishing the combo with the guns on his shoulder being primed and shot
  • A large combo that can be annoying to avoid is when the boss will swing the flagpole that’s in his right hand as he swings it from left to right before following up this attack rapidly with a sword slash before doing a third attack by swinging the flagpole again but this time from left to right
  • One unblockable attack that the boss will use is a simple slam with the flagpole he is holding straight down in front of him
  • The final combo that the boss could employ is where he will stab towards you with his sword before stabbing towards you with the flagpole and then ending the combo with a circular arc with the flagpole

Now that you know the attacks this boss will employ, getting used to them and preparing for a challenging fight will be a piece of cake, but sadly, this boss will not go down so easily, as once you manage to defeat him, he will have a small surprise for you.

How to Beat General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer’s Second Phase

Valor Mortis General Lothaire up close during stagger attack.

After you take down General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer’s first health bar, you will likely be saddened to see there is a second phase to this boss fight, as he will fall to one knee and begin to draw in some of the strange liquid that has been seen throughout the game so far.

Pro Tip: While the boss is going through the animation you can begin to use your Fire Transmutation if you have ammo for it to build the burn status on him and do a small amount of damage in the process for an easy beginning to your fight.

Once the boss finishes this animation, the second phase will begin, and the boss will start to use a whole new collection of attacks this time around, as he has now thrown away the sword he was holding and replaced it with a large fleshy hand. Just like the above phase, we will simply supply a list of combos the boss will use against you, as there are quite a few.

  • A big attack that the boss will use is when he does an unblockable attack with his newly formed hand that slashes in an arc before slashing back with the same hand and finishing the combo with a swinging attack with the flagpole
  • Another attack the boss can use, which is quite fast, is when the boss will swing his flagpole from the left to the right before following it up with a large slash with his hand quite quickly after the first attack
  • One attack that you might struggle with is when the boss begins to raise his newly formed hand and starts charging a large red orb within it. This attack can be incredibly dangerous, so you will need to use your pistol to shoot the ball as soon as you can, but if you do not have bullets, you may need to retreat, as the fire isn’t as quick
  • There is one attack where the boss will begin by jabbing towards you with his flagpole before doing a large unblockable slam attack with his newly formed hand
  • Finally, there is one attack you will need to watch out for, and this is when the boss raises his flagpole into the sky as this may seem rather basic, when he does this, he will summon clones of the troopers who are dead onto the battlefield. The simplest way to defeat these is by using the Fire Transmutation, as they die in one hit, and this can hit in an arena in front of you

These are all the attacks you will need to watch out for when you are fighting with General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer, and once you defeat him, you will earn your rewards, which are 10,000 Catalyst, the currency to upgrade your character, and the option to enter the Abandoned Church to continue your journey.
