Chapter IX of Valor Mortis has one of the most complicated bosses to beat. The Orphan will be quick, poisonous, and extraordinarily deadly. This failed experiment is the protector of what remains of a laboratory that was experimenting with the crimson plague. After defeating this boss, you’ll be very close to the end of the game.
How to Find the Orphan in Valor Mortis

Almost at the end of Chapter IX, in a university, there will be a laboratory in the underground section of the building. By exploring this area of Valor Mortis, you’ll find out that the army was conducting experiments with the crimson plague and humans. Obviously, that didn’t end well. However, one powerful being was the ultimate failed result of these experiments, and he survived, becoming the Orphan. At the end of the level, you’ll trigger this boss fight, which has two phases to defeat.
How to Beat the Orphan

For the first phase of this boss fight, be aware of the poisonous smoke that will come from the floor. These clouds will build up and inflict the poisoned effect, which will instantly kill you. These clouds of poisonous gas are easy to spot because they are marked on the floor, but they are complicated to avoid while also dodging the Orphan’s attacks.
The Orphan will try to stab you with a swift attack. Once you avoid it, he will continue with three or four swings of his weapon. Be careful, as it has more reach than it seems at first sight. To start the fight, try to burn him so he loses some health from a safe distance. Then, strike with your sword and use all the powers you have. After a couple of strikes, he will be stuck to the floor, so you can deal a little damage that way, too.
Right after getting stuck to the floor, he will activate a special attack where he turns off the lights and tries to reach you from underground like a shark. After he jumps out from below, he will be stuck for a brief moment. That’s your chance to land several blows with your sword or shoot at him. Then, he will repeat his attacks, so just be aware of the distance and the gas, and you can beat him with patience and a couple of strikes with the right timing.
The best way to rush through the first phase of the Orphan fight is to inflict as much stasis damage as possible.
How to Beat the Orphan phase 2

For the second and final phase, he will become a completely different enemy. First, he will now have both arms freed, and he will no longer have any restraints limiting his movements. So, he will be faster and deadlier than before, like all second phases of final bosses ever.
While he’ll land more blows in a row, there is space to dodge, but always keep your distance. You won’t be able to dodge every blow because he will throw more than six punches in a row. Just try to take one or two hits and then counterattack. He’ll also spit poison at you. Again, try to inflict stasis damage to reduce his health little by little.
The key to surviving the second phase is to keep your distance and wait for an opening. He’ll also have unblockable strikes when he has less than half of his health bar remaining, so be careful with that. Always heal yourself when you have less than half of your health bar. The reward for defeating the Orphan is 40,000 catalysts.
