While exploring the first chapter in Valor Mortis, you will eventually find yourself coming up against the boss. The Iron Marshall is in the third chapter of the game, and you will likely be wondering what the easiest way to defeat him may be, so we are here to aid you in your adventure and help you defeat this boss with ease.

Along with finding The Iron Marshall boss fight, you will also uncover the new ability, the Grapple, after defeating said boss, and this will aid you in moving to the next area of the game.

How to Find The Iron Marshall in Valor Mortis

If you haven’t found The Iron Marshall already, then do not worry, as we are here to help you discover this boss for yourselves, but to do this you will first need to at least be in the third chapter of the game within the Fallen Village, and we will guide you part of the way from the second rest spot to the third, as this is the part of this chapter you might struggle with.

When it comes to finding your way to this boss, the initial area of the Fallen Village is quite a straight line with a few shortcuts involved, but when you are exploring between the second and third lanterns, the path can be quite confusing and overwhelming, as there are a lot of enemies lurking around and even secrets to find.

After you rest at the second lantern, you will need to make your way through the barn to your right, but be warned there are enemies lurking inside, but once you deal with them, you will need to make your way to the second floor, and there will be a hole in the wall with a path onto a platform with a ladder you can drop down as a shortcut before jumping over the fence.

Once you jump over the fence, you will find yourself in a rather large area filled to the brim with enemies, both small and large, but if you are careful, there is a way to stealth around them by climbing over the roofs and through various buildings, taking out unaware enemies.

However, before you move fully into this area, there is a memory on the right-hand side that shows a group of soldiers trying to run into a building due to an alarm being set off, but sadly you cannot follow them inside just yet.

For this guide, we will follow the idea that you have defeated the enemies and have free rein over this location, which isn’t overly hard if you manage to take on small groups at a time and use stealth to defeat enemies that aren’t aware of you yet. Once you manage to get free rein over this location, if you want to make your way into the house from the memory, you will need to head to the centre of this market and destroy the bell that is ringing in the centre by shooting it down with your pistol.

After you have done this, the house with the memory will now be open for you to explore, but sadly no soldiers will be located inside, just some notes and loot.

In order to progress with the story and head towards The Iron Marshall, you will need to head to the right-hand side of the market, where a group of enemy riflemen is shooting corpses in a firing line. This house is where you will need to make your way in, but sadly all the doors are shut, so you will need to head to the left of this house into a small barn that has a ladder leading upwards to a bridge between the two buildings.

Now you have made it onto the second floor of the house; there will be a chest on the balcony, but be warned: the floor in the centre of the balcony does fall out, so you will need to run and jump to get across. Other than this, you will simply need to head downstairs, and there is a door you can open as a shortcut from the bottom floor, and in the back of the house is a hole leading underground.

This hole is where you need to go, as this allows you to continue moving forward, but there is a problem, as there is a flesh wall blocking your path that you need to clear out. To do this, you simply need to shoot a boil that can be found in a room in the corner of the basement, and now you have access to a new area.

Before you continue on your path, there is another shortcut you can open here, which is a side gate that leads you back to the main market. We recommend opening this gate, as this next area is likely to cause you to die, and you will need the fast entrance back.

After opening this gate, you need to turn around, and there will be a path up the hill leading you to an orchard that is full of patrolling enemies, but before this, a tall enemy will be waiting to block your path, so to progress, you will need to take him down.

Once you defeat this enemy, the rest of the orchard is pretty simple to navigate, with enemies patrolling in straight lines that you can either sneak up to and kill or simply sneak past, but be careful, as there are some exploding corpses lying around that can easily catch you off guard.

The main direction you will want to head in this orchard is to the right once you enter the gate up a small hill, as this will guide you to the third lantern of this area that you can rest at before you encounter The Iron Marshall.

How to Beat The Iron Marshall

Valor Mortis boss The Iron Marshall attacking the player.

Now that you have arrived at the third lantern rest spot, The Iron Marshall boss fight is not very far away, and by this we mean you will only need to wait a few seconds before you encounter him, as the next area is where he resides.

Although there is no fog wall to protect you from this boss, when you enter this area, he will not jump out at you straight away, but you instead need to get very central to the arena for him to barge out of the large barn and begin the boss fight.

In terms of attacks, The Iron Marshall doesn’t do many attacks, as he relies on power over variety, with most of his attacks dealing half or more than half your health damage (and we even had max health for the time), meaning that getting hit repeatedly would be the end of your run against him.

Valor Mortis odd ring to obtain the Grapple ability.

Due to this, we found that avoiding his attacks was more important than parrying, as any error could result in you losing a lot of health or death if you couldn’t get back into the groove and protect yourself properly, so dodging was incredibly vital, as this boss is very clunky and will do his attacks and then take a few seconds to reset before trying another.

This means that you have quite a few opportunities to attack the enemy after his combos have ended, so make sure you capitalise on these opportunities, especially if you can end up behind him, as this is where his weak spot can be found, and it is his entire back, so it is hard to miss.

In regard to his attacks, we have created a list below of all the combos he will use against you so that you can be prepared for the fight:

  • One of the most common attacks The Iron Marshall will use is when he slams his weapon 3 times in front of him starting from his right, then left, then right with this attack being the easiest to parry as it never changes in terms of timing
  • An unblockable attack the boss uses is when he does a large overhead swing with his weapon slamming it into the floor but then needing a second to rest before attacking again
  • Another attack the boss will use is when he swipes his weapon along the floor in a large arc twice, this can happen quite quick with no warning and will likely catch you off-guard a lot
  • The boss does have a charging attack where he will run at you before attempting to slam his weapon on the floor, but this can be easily dodged and he telegraphs it quite early
  • There is a simple attack the boss will use where he drags his weapon from behind into an uppercut swing which can easily be misunderstood as the swiping arc from earlier

These are all the attacks the boss will throw at you, so be careful when standing too close, as he can be a powerful enemy to fight if you do not give yourself time to heal. Once you defeat this boss, you will now have earned yourself 7,500 catalysts as well as the opportunity to head inside the barn the boss was in and unlock a new ability in the form of grapple, which is a lot of fun to use.
