As you progress through Valor Mortis, you will eventually learn how to use various abilities known as transmutations that can be used to either move around the game world more easily or to fight enemies in unique ways. There are quite a few variations of these transmutations that you will be able to acquire, but to use them to their fullest potential, you will need to upgrade them.

In order to upgrade your transmutations, you will need to venture through the first two chapters of the game and end up in the third chapter, as the ending of this chapter is where you will find the NPC that you need to upgrade your transmutations.

For a bit of context, as you finish the second act of the game and end up in the Abandoned Church location, which acts as your hub within the game world, when you arrive there, an NPC known as James will help you to upgrade your weapons, but he will also task you with heading to a village where another of your comrades lies in wait.

The comrade in question is called Lious, and he can be found at the very end of the chapter, which only has 4 rest spots in it, while also having a new weapon and a new ability waiting inside for you.

To actually find this Lious, you will need to navigate through the location of the Fallen Village as it burns down around you, as you can also complete two side quests known as The Scarecrow and The Lullaby before acquiring the Blunderbuss weapon and heading towards the boss of the area and the unique ability lurking within.

Once you complete all of these objectives, you will now be eligible to find Lious in a house, which is indicated by a large puff of smoke that is mentioned when you first enter the location, as again this is Lious trying to indicate where he is so the player can find him.

After you find him, he will return to the Abandoned Church and grant you access to the Transmutation upgrades bench which, similar to the weapon upgrades, allows you to use resources to upgrade the transmutations in terms of damage and even grants them unique buffs that you need to decide between in order to make them effective.

Along with this, you will also gain access to Lious’ store, which has upgrade items in it, items to help use the Transmutations, and even healing vial items to make surviving in this dark world a little easier if you have the Catalysts to burn.
