As you begin your adventure within Valor Mortis and get out of the tutorial area, you will eventually stumble into your first side quest within the game, which is known as An Unheard Farewell, and will help guide you on your journey and progress through this next section of the game.

How to Complete An Unheard Farewell

In order to begin the side quest An Unheard Farewell, you will first need to progress far enough into the game where you will come across a broken-down bridge and an upheaved train, which you can find after fighting a tough enemy that throws grenades at you.

As you approach the train, a voice will call out, asking you for your help in searching for their escort that has gone missing, and as a kind soul, you agree to find these soldiers.

How to Find the Missing Soldiers

Your first step in this side quest is to find the missing soldiers from the escort, and to do so you simply need to follow the path across the bridge, or at least partially across the bridge, and the reason for this is because the bridge has collapsed and you will not be able to head across just yet.

However, this won’t stop you, as there is a path down from the bridge, as you can jump down to different platforms, slowly making your way to the left-hand side of the bridge. Halfway down this climb you will also manage to come across another train cart, and this is one you do not want to run through too fast, as you can find an item to help you progress.

Within this train cart you will be able to find yourself a pistol, which is a perfect beginner ranged weapon in Valor Mortis, as this gun can be used to both clear your path and defeat enemies.

The reason this weapon can be useful at this point in the quest is because you will need it to shoot out the boils that create a wall blocking your path forward further down at the other end of the train cart that leads you to a cliff side that has a few new enemies and a rest spot to boot.

Do not forget to activate this rest spot, but once you do, you will need to make your way up the cliff by using an elevator that is covered up by the strange substance that you have likely come across throughout the game, and to clear it up, you will need to shoot out more boils.

To find the boil, you will need to turn to the water of this area, as there is a large rock formation quite near the lantern that you are able to climb up, and upon reaching the highest part of this cliff, which is around halfway up the formation, you can look towards the cliff side above the lantern to discover the boil you will need to shoot out.

After you shoot out this boil, you will unlock the elevator that was covered in the strange fleshy mesh, which will guide you to the first group of soldiers. However, not all is as it seems, as first the elevator will only take you halfway up, with the top of the shaft being blocked by more of the flesh mass, but this is okay, as the way forward is a small crouching tunnel to the side of this elevator, guiding you into a rather horrifying room.

Within this room you will find a new form of enemies, which look essentially like blobs of flesh that crawl along the floor and can attack you with spikes from their body and are quite easy to kill. Once you kill these enemies, you will now be able to look up within this room to find a large mass in the ceiling that has begun enveloping the soldiers, likely to create these blobs.

Sadly, you will note that these are the soldiers you are looking for; however, you are not content that this is all of them, and you feel that you can find survivors still so you can continue forward in your search of survivors.

Finding More Survivors

Now that you have found the first group of survivors, you will need to make your way out of this cave, but not the way you came in, but instead up a ladder that leads you to a fire and an exit from this cave that has you parkour around the edge of the cliff on various wooden platforms.

Throughout these platforms you can find a fairly decent amount of loot and some enemies to fight, but you want to make sure you stop running around the cliffside when you find yourself at a ladder that leads you to another covered elevator hatch, as this is where you want to concentrate your attention.

If you haven’t figured it out, this is where the original elevator would have risen too if it wasn’t blocked, so what you will need to do is open it up, and to do this, you simply need to follow the red pulsating vine to the boil, which can be found on the wall to the right on the inside of the cave.

After you have opened up this shortcut from the original lantern, we would recommend that you head down and rest as it is because once you head back up this elevator on the same floor you got off originally for the mass of soldiers, you will need to jump off here and head left rather than right into a large room with one sole soldier standing inside, and yes, we said standing.

Sadly, although this soldier is standing, he isn’t exactly friendly, as he will try and fight you, and this fight can be a challenge, as this enemy has really fast attacks and can deal a lot of damage, so you want to be prepared.

Once you defeat this enemy, you will again be prompted by a voice line from the main character and even a chess that you can loot before being prompted to return to the quest giver by the bridge.

Return to the Quest Giver

As if entering this cave and finding this sad story, you will need to make your way back up to the quest giver, who is hiding within the broken train, and doing this is rather simple for the most part, as you will simply need to head back to the top of the elevator and continue on the path forward on the outside of the cliffside with two paths that both end up at the same place, which is below the bridge.

Keep following this path and fighting the enemies within until you eventually find yourself at a fleshy mass that acts like a bridge guiding you around this location.

Now that you have found the fleshy path, keep rising upwards to the top of the area to find a vantage spot to shoot out the fleshy boil that allows you access to the rest of the bridge before heading over to a ladder shortcut that is on a cliff edge nearby, bringing you right back to the quest giver and the lantern there.

However, if you are looking to explore a bit more, there is the opportunity to find another quest in this location, as instead of following the fleshy path to the top, you can stop around halfway, placing yourself on a cliff-side path that will lead you to a small arena with a very strong enemy inside that will start a new side quest for you to progress throughout the story.

Going back to the side quest at hand, though, once you arrive here, you will now have the option to interact with the quest giver and provide him with the information of his missing crew, and you will have the option to either lie to him and tell him they are okay or tell him the truth that they are all dead.

After this he will explain that he will continue on his journey, leaving you to your peace, but if you choose to return to this location later in the game, you can find an item that this quest giver has left for you by the flag placed by the train.
